d. Using an inside micrometer, measure the boreof the cylinder sleeve.Using an outside micrometer, measure the outer diameter of the piston skirt at theright angle to the piston pin and at the bottom of theskirt. The difference between the two readings is therunning clearance.e.The gap between ends of piston rings should bemeasured before rings are installed on pistons.In-sufficient end gap can cause scored rings and scoredcylinder sleeves.Check the ring gap by insertingeach ring into the cylinder sleeve in which it is to beused. Use a piston to push ring squarely down in thebore of the cylinder sleeve and far enough to be on thering travel area.Check ring gap with a feelerThe ring end gaps, using cylinder sleeves of 4.4.251 inches bore are:Top compression ring0.013-0.027 inchCenter rings0.013-0.024 inchOil control ring (3 pc.)0. 013-0, 024 inchCAUTIONThe piston rings should never be filed toopen the gap because the chrome platingmight be loosened by the file and laterdistributed through the engine causingdamage or scoring of the piston and thecylinder sleeve.gauge.2495 -f. Measure ring-to-groove clearance (top of ringto top of groove in piston). The ring to groove clear-ances, using a new piston and new rings, are asfollows:Top compression ring0.0040-0.0060 inchCenter rings0.0020-0.0040 inchOil control ring (3 pc.)0.0005-0.0030 inchg. Install one of the piston pin retainers in one endof the piston pin hole in the piston.h. Insert upper end of connecting rod into piston.—CAUTIONWhen assembling piston to connecting rod, make certain top of piston stamped CAM -SHAFT SIDE is toward side of connectingrod stamped with numbers identifying thecap with upper portion of rod.i.Lubricate piston pin with clean 0i1 and, with apiston pin remover and installerinto piston and connecting rod.j. Install the other piston pinposite end of the piston pin bore.NOT EAfter piston rings have beentool tap piston pinretainer at the op-properly fitted, lubricate piston and rings with engine oil.Install second and third rings on piston (withside marked "Top" or "T" toward top of piston)using a piston ring remover and installer tool.Top ring may be installed with either sidetoward top.Install each piston, with rings and connecting rods, asan assembly. The lower end of each connecting rod,as well as the connecting rod bearing caps, are num-ber 1, 2, 3, etc. for identification. They must beinstalled in the corresponding numbered cylinder withthe numberedside of rod toward the camshaft side ofengine.k. Stagger piston rings gaps 180° apart and in linewith piston pin holes, and apply clean engine oil topistons and rings. With a piston ring compressor(piston inserted), install the piston and connectingrod in the cylinder sleeve by pressing on top of pis-ton with wooden hammer handle. If any difficulty isencountered, however slight, the piston inserted mustbe removed and ring set inspected for correct instal-lation in piston grooves.Align lower end of connec-ting rod with crankshaft before inserting piston intocylinder.1. Lubricate and install a bearing shell in positionin connecting rod, with tang of bearing shell in thecorresponding slot in connecting rod, and position rodon crankshaft journal.CAUTIONMake certain the backs of the bearing shellsare free from dirt and grit particles,m.Lubricate and install a bearing shell in posi-tion in the connecting rod bearing cap, with tang ofbearing shell in corresponding slot in bearing cap.Install bearing cap and shell, making certain identi-fication number stamped in the bearing cap is locatedon the same side as corresponding number stampedin the connecting rod.n .Prior to installation, thoroughly clean and drywith compressed air all of the connecting rod cap-screws (lock bolts).o.Install an 0i1 lubricated piston and connectingassembly, minus bearing cap but with upper bearingshell in place, in engine.NOT EDo not allow the rod to scratch the cylinderbore nor let it strike the crankshaft webs orthrust faces when pushing rod into place onthe crankpin.p. Check rod anti cap index numbers for positionanti correctly assemble cap, with lower bearing shellin place. to the rod.q. Generously coat the capscrew threads and theirunderhead areas with engine lubricating oil.r.Install connecting rod capscrews and tighten to8-12 foot -pounds torque, (the socket head capscrewsrequire a male 3 8 inch hex wrench).s.Using a plastic head hammer and striking theconnecting rod cap on its balance pad only, align thecap to the rod by driving it first against the crankpinforward web and then against the crankpin rear web.14-91
