As the armature revolves in the growler, hold a steel strip (such as a hacksaw blade) above it.  The blade will vibrate above the area of the armature core on which the short circuit is located. (2) Use a 110 volt test lamp with test points to detect grounds.  Place one test point on the armature core or shaft and the other on the commutator.  If the lamp lights, the armature is grounded. h. Field Coil Test.  Test field coil insulation resistance with megger connected between frame and one coil terminal.  Minimum resistance reading permissible is one megohm. i. Solenoid Test.  Disconnect all leads from the solenoid and make test connections as shown in figure 13-6. (1) To check the hold-in winding, follow connections shown in solid line. (2) Use the carbon pile to adjust the voltage to 20 volts.  Voltmeter shall read 20 V DC and ammeter shall read 6.1 to 6.8 amps.  A high ammeter reading indicates a shorted or grounded hold-in winding. A low reading indicates excessive resistance.
