A complete housing kit is available for the 500KW generator set and should be used when the unit isinstalled outdoors on a pad. Without the housing kit, thegenerator set may be installed indoors on a pad. Boththe indoor and outdoor pads should be fitted with twelvespring-loaded shock mounts for mounting the generatorset.17-14. The location of the unit is governed primarily byits related systems and proximity to the incomingelectrical service. Weather conditions will also affectboth location and the accessory equipment required toprovide proper system operation. Locations whereextreme ambient temperatures occur should beavoided. Where the generator set must be exposed tolow temperature ambients, the integral engine heatermay be used to assist starting.17-15. Whether located indoors or outdoors, preventivemaintenance is an important consideration whenselecting or designating a generator set location. Inaddition to the control cubicle, the following servicepoints should be accessible to the operator:a.Air cleanerb.Primary fuel filterc.Secondary fuel filterd.Lube oil dip sticke.Lube oil filterf.Lube oil draing.Fan belt adjustmenth.Radiator filler openingi.Cooling system drainsj.Fuel tank draink.Hand-hole coversl.Removal of oil -panm.Removal of rocker coversn.Battery servicing and removalo.Starterp.Battery chargerq.Diode removal from generator endbell.17-16. Before final plans are made for locating agenerator set, the following points should be consideredfor both housed and unhoused units:a.Mounting provisions must be strong enough tosupport the set and related equipment.b.Vibration should be effectively isolated anddampened to reduce noise and preventdamage.c.Area should be clean and dry and not subject toflooding.d.Area should be large enough to provide easyaccess for servicing and repair, and freemovement of cooling air (see figure 17-1).e.The set should be in close proximity to theauxiliary fuel tank.f.For generator sets installed indoors:(1)Ventilation should be available in the areawith a minimum amount of duct work andwhich will maintain set temperature in arange for efficient engine operation.(2)Exhaust gases should be expelled safelyout of and away from the structure.Section III. MOUNTING THE GENERATOR SET17-17. The 500 KW generator set should be mountedon a substantial level base, preferably class B concretewith a design strength of 2500 psi.17-18.
