This chapter contains instructions for operation, power and control connections. Location and function ofcontrols and indicators, and safety precautions are also pro-vided.b. Refer to table 3-2 and perform “Before Operation”Preventive Maintenance Checks and Services before operat-ing the Generator Set.c.CAUTIONIf set will be idle for some time, disconnect thenegative battery lead. Be sure to reconnect whenload is placed on set.Table 2-1 describes the Generator Set controls andinstruments (see figure 2-3).WARNINGAll personnel involved in the operation ormaintenance of the Generator Set shouldbecome thoroughly familiar with the safety pre-cautions prior to performing operation ormaintenance procedures.Prior to connection of load cables, make sure allswitches are in OFF or OPEN position, the Gen-erator Set is not operating.Inspect the Generator Set ground connectionprior to starting the unit. Electrical defects inload lines or load equipment can cause death byelectrocution when contact is made with anungrounded system.Do not smoke or carry an open flame when ser-vicing the batteries or fuel tank. Exerciseextreme care to prevent electrical arcing in thearea of the batteries.Battery electrolyte contains sulfuric acid andcan cause severe burns. Handle it with care. Ifthe electrolyte comes in contact with the body, eyes, or clothing, rinse immediately with cleanwater. Avoid spilling electrolyte on painted sur-faces. Do not work alone or smoke when servic-ing batteries.Do not operate Generator Set in an enclosedarea unless the exhaust gases are piped to theoutside. Continued breathing of exhaust fumesis dangerous.2-2.2-3.Stay clear of all exposed electrical terminalswhen Generator Set is operating.Remove all rings, watches and other jewelrywhen performing maintenance on this equip-ment. Loose fitting clothing should be secured toprevent it from catching in moving parts.POWERCONNECTIONS.WARNINGBEFORE ATTEMPTING TO CONNECTLOAD CABLES, MAKE SURE THE GENER-ATOR SET IS NOT OPERATING. ALLSWITCHES ARE IN THE OFF OR OPENPOSITION.To connect load cables to Generator Set, attachload leads to terminals located in output controlbox, as required. See figures 2-1 and 2-3.NOTEFor 120V, 1 PH operation connect safetyground (generally green) and neutral (white) toL-1. Connect the hot wire (black) to L-3.EOUIPMENTRECONNECTION.Before operating unit, be certain voltage and frequency rat-ing of the load matches that of the Generator Set. If theoutput voltage of the Generator Set must be changed tomatch a particular load, rotate reconnection switch locatedon Reconnection Panel to desired output connections. Seefigure 2-2.2-4. STARTINGGENERATORSET(SEEFIGURE2-3).CAUTIONDo not idle engine.Operate generator set only at rated RPM.Do not use either to aid starting generator set.Do not operate in excess of 200 hours continu-ous with JP-4, MIL-J-5624 bulk fuel.a.
