4-79. REPAIR ROCKER HOUSING COVERS. The rocker housing covers prevent dirt from entering and oil from
leaving rocker assembly.
a.
Remove the rocker housing covers in accordance with paragraph 3-14.
b.
Remove minor nicks and warpage from gasket surface using a flat mill file.
c.
Install rocker housing covers In accordance with paragraph 3-14.
4-80. ADJUST INTAKE AND EXHAUST VALVES. Intake and exhaust valves permit entering of combustion gases and
exiting of exhaust gases from cylinders. Adjustment of the intake and exhaust valve clearance is accomplished by
adjusting the valve crossheads and rocker levers. Refer to paragraph 4-81.
4-81. MAINTENANCE OF ROCKER LEVERS AND CROSSHEADS. Rocker levers and crossheads insure proper
opening clearances of exhaust and intake valves.
a.
Inspect.
(1) Remove rocker housing covers in accordance with paragraph 3-14.
(2) Visually examine rocker levers (1, 2, and 3, Figure 4-51) and valve crosshead (1, Figure 4-52) for cracks.
Inspect adjusting screws and nuts for signs of visible damage.
(3) Remove clip on barring nut and install barring tool Rotate engine using barring nut and socket with breaker bar
until some clearance exists at rocker levers on the cylinder being inspected.
