TM5-6115-593-34NAVFAC P-8-631-34TO-35C2-3-463-2CHAPTER 13MAINTENANCE OF ENGINE ASSEMBLYSection I. GENERAL13-1. DESCRIPTION. This chapter contains detailedinstructions for maintenance of the engine assemblywhich provides the mechanical power to drive the maingenerator. The engine assembly consists of a 12-cylinder, V-type, turbocharged, after cooled diesel engine.13-2. REMOVAL OF ENGINE ASSEMBLY. Refer toChapter 2, Section IV, and remove the engine orgenerator assembly, as required, for the replacement ofparts, repair, rebuilding, and overhaul of specificcomponents listed in this chapter.Section II. SPEED SWITCH, TACHOMETER DRIVE AND ADAPTER, AND STARTER13-3. SPEED SWITCH (Code "A"). To adjust and repairthe mechanical type speed switch, refer to figures 13-1and 13-2 and proceed as follows:a.General.(1)The speed switch, driven by thecamshaft through a tachometer driveassembly and an adapter, providessequenced control of circuits during enginestartup and protection against engineoverspeed during operation. Three sets ofcontact elements, S9-1, SO-2, and S9-3,contained in the speed switch, are set toopen, close, or transfer by centrifugal forceat certain engine speeds. The speed switchdrive gear is designed to drive the speedswitch at one-half engine speed.(2)At an engine speed of 580 to 620rpm (accelerating) element S9-1 transferstwo sets of contacts, energizing the fieldflash circuit and de-energizing the crankrelay to stop the starting motor.(3)When the engine reaches thespeed range of 1180 to 1220 rpm, elementS9-2 closes, energizing theelectrichydraulic governor which takescontrol of engine speed.(4)Speed switch element S9-3consists of two sets of contacts which areset to transfer at an engine speed 225025rpm to shut down the engine andprevent damage to the equipment.Shutdown is achieved by de-energizing thefuel shut-off valve, cutting off fuel to theengine, and closing the air box solenoid.(5) Elements S9-1 and S9-2 reset at100 rpm (decreasing) below actuationspeed. Element S9-3 is manually reset by apushbutton on the speed switch housing.b.SpeedSwitchRemoval. Refer to Operator/Crewand Organizational Maintenance manual forremoval of the speed switch.c.SpeedSwitchTests,Adjustment,RepairandInstallation(Mechanical Type Switch).(1) Connect a variable speed drivedevice to the speed switch drive. The drivedevice must have a tachometer in order todetermine the speed of the device in rpm's.(2)With an ohmmeter on the R1scale, reading from the speed switchconnector, check for the contact conditionsof elements S9-1,13-1
