TM5-6115-593-34NAVFAC P-8-631-34TO-35C2-3-463-2NOTELow insulation resistance may be caused bydirt or excessive moisture. Insulation failuremay be caused by wrong voltages, inducedvoltages caused by opening field circuitstoo quickly, oil and grease, hightemperatures, or excessive vibration.Windings may be dried out by heat from awarm air oven, heat lamps, or strip heaters. The temperature should not exceed 167°F(75°C).WARNINGWHEN OVEN DRYING, USE A FORCED AIRCIRCULATION OVEN, NOT A RADIANTTYPE. RADIANT TYPE OVEN WOULDOVERHEAT SOME GENERATOR PARTSBEFORE REMOTE PARTS REACHED ASATISFACTORY TEMPERATURE.c.Replacement. For removal and replacement ofthe exciter stator, refer to paragraph 11-6.d.Repair.(1)Replace or rebuilt all defective parts.NOTETo remove coils from core, heat in amoderate oven temperature 302°F (150°C) tofacilitate removal. Single coils should notbe replaced as adjacent parts of the windingmay be damaged during coil removal.(2)Apply varnish to any damaged areas ofinsulation.(3) Replace damaged exciter stator.e.Rebuild.(1) Rebuild exciter stator as follows:(a) Single wires may be spliced by brazing. The splice is to be insulated by slidingsleeving over the wire prior to brazingandrelocating the sleeving over the splice after completion. The sleeving is to extend a minimum of1/2 inch (13 mm) beyond the bareuninsulated portion of wire. The sleevingmaterial is to be the same as that usedfor crossovers on the connection end.Splices shall be made in the end turn ofthe coil only and shall not be made in thestraight leg. Where more than one spliceis required, the second splice must notoccur on the same coil end and must notoccur in adjacent coils. Where more thanone splice is necessary in the same coilor an adjacent coil, the splice may bemade in the connection end of the coil.(b)Enamel is to be cleaned from coilextensions. Cleaning is to start as nearsleeving as possible. Clean a 1/2 inch (13mm) section of wire end projecting from asleeving. Maximum uncleaned wireprojecting from a sleeving section shall be 3inches (76 mm) minimum to 5 inches (127mm) maximum. Wire diameter is to bereduced a maximum of 5 percent. Cleanedarea shall have enamel removed over 80percent of the surface.(c)Slot tubes should be inserted with overhangequally divided on ends. Minimum slottube overhang (distance from core to end ofslot tube) shall be 1/4 inch (6 mm).Position of the11-32
