TM5-6115-593-34NAVFAC P-8-631-34TO-35C2-3-463-2(4)Rotor. Perform a growler test on therotor as follows:(a)Place the rotor on the growler andenergize.(b)Hold a thin piece of metal, such asa hack-saw blade, directly over thetop slot of the rotor and along thelength of the slot. If the coil isshorted the blade will vibraterapidly and cause a growling noise.(c)If the above test is not met, proceed with the repairprocedures.(5)PM Generator Exciter Field. Performthe following resistance checks:(a)At lead separation box, disconnectand tag PM generator exciter fieldleads (there are three; thecommon; the 50 Hertz tap; and the60 Hertz tap).(b)Using a double Kelvin bridge, check the resistance between thecommon lead and the 50 Hertztap. Resistance should be 1.1ohms ±10 percent.(c)Using a double Kelvin bridge, check the resistance between thecommon lead and the 60 Hertztap. Resistance should be 1.35ohms ±10 percent.(6)PM Generator Permanent Magnet. Thestrength of the magnet field surroundingthe permanent magnet (rotor), becauseof its in accessibility, may not bechecked directly. However, if the ACoutput of the PM generator is within ±10percent of 135V AC at 1800 rpm, thepermanent magnet may beconsidered normal. If the PM generator outputis out of tolerance and checking the resistanceof the PM exciter field (as indicated in theprevious subparagraph 5) produces positiveresults, the permanent magnet, by the processof elimination, may be considered defective. Ifdefective, refer to paragraph 11-6 forreplacement procedures for permanent magnetrotor assembly.b.Replacement.(1)Removal. The following steps are for theremoval of the generator from thegenerator set frame.(a)If generator set is equipped with ahousing kit remove panels (34 and30, figure 15-21) and strip (27).(b)The permanent magnet assemblymust be removed prior to removinggenerator from generator set, asfollows (see figure 11-3):(1)Remove screws (16 and 28), washers(29), and nuts (27) and remove cover(30).(2)Remove screws (31) and washers (32)and remove permanent magnet stator(33).WARNINGUSE EXTREME CARE WHEN REMOVINGROTOR TO PREVENT INJURY TO HANDS DUETO MAGNETIC ATTRACTION BETWEEN THEPERMANENT MAGNET GENERATOR ROTORAND THE PERMANENT MAGNET GENERATORSTATOR OR GENERATOR SHAFT.(3)Remove bolt (34), washers (35) andspring pin (36) and remove magnet rotor(37).11-10
