4 - 1 6.DESCRIPTION AND FUNCTION.
T h e e n g i n e h a s a p r e s s u r e a i r c o o l i n g s y s t e m . F i ns
on the engine blower draw air into the front of the en-
gine housing and force it past the cylinders and out
t h e r i g h t s i d e o f t h e e n g i n e . T h e e n g i n e a i r o u t l et
u s e s a s h u t t e r a s s e m b l y t o c o n t r o l e n g i n e t e m p e r-
ature. Part of the air is directed thru the air cleaner
a t c o l d t e m p e r a t u r e s . A t h e r m o p o w e r u n i t c o n t r o ls
shutter opening which limits air flow when the engine
i s c o l d . W h e n t h e e n g i n e a i r t e m p e r a t u r e r e a c h es
a p p r o x i m a t e l y 1 2 0 ° F ( 4 9 ° C ) , t h e s h u t t e r s b e g i n t o
o p e n . T h e s h u t t e r s a r e c o m p l e t e l y o p e n a t 1 4 0 °F
(60°C). The cooling system contains a high temper-
a t u r e c u t - o u t s w i t c h t h a t s h u t s d o w n t h e e n g i n e i n
case the engine temperature reaches 394°F (201°C).
4-17. ENGINE COOLING ASSEMBLY.
a. Inspection (See figure 3-17). On ASK equipped generators,
refer to para 5-3 and 5-8 and remove ASK cover assembly and
exhaust plenum assembly. Check that ASK front panel assembly
is clear of debris.

c h e c k t h a t p a n e l h i n g e w o r k s p r o p e r l y . W i t h p a n el
open, check engine fins for cleanliness and obstruction
to airflow.
