Visually inspect the condition of the valve (4),preferably with aid of a magnifying glass. The lappedsurface (large outer diameter) of the valve must besmooth and free of signs of scoring. Also, the valvemust not show any wear or damage at seat location.If the valve is damaged in any way, the nozzle assem-bly (1) must be replaced.i. Thoroughly rinse the valve (4) and valve body (3)in clean diesel fuel. The valve must fit freely in thevalve body.To check this fit, lift valve about onethird of its length out of the body. The valve shouldslide down to its seat without aid when assembly isheld at a 45° angle.j. If the fit of the valve in the valve body is un-satisfactory, the valve may be cleaned and polishedwith lapping compound and castor oil used on tissuepaper. The valve may be held by its stem in a re-volving chuck for this cleaning operation. Anorange stick or round toothpick will be helpful incleaning the valve.CAUTIONHard or sharp tools, emery cloth,crocus cloth, jeweler’s rouge, grind-ing compounds, or other abrasivesshould never be used in cleaning.14-28 Change 7
