If they are worn, the rocker arm assemblies must bereplaced.b.Adjustment.(See Figure 4-59.) Correctclearance (valve lash) between end of intakevalve stem, exhaust valve stem, and relatedrocker arms, is very important in diesel engineperformance because of high compressiondeveloped within the cylinders. Insufficientvalve lash will cause loss of compression, misfiring, and eventually lead to burning ofvalves and valve seats. Excessive valve lashwill result in faulty engine operation, valve lifternoise, and cause rapid wear on the valveoperating mechanism. With engine normaloperating temperature or 160°F (71°C)minimum, valve lash for both intake andexhaust valves is 0.014-0.027 inch (0.36-0.69mm). Adjust injector tappet (the middle lever ineach group of three levers) by looseningadjusting screw one turn. Using a torquewrench, tighten adjusting screw to 70 inch-pounds (7.96 joules) and tighten locknut to 40 to45 ft.-pounds. After any mechanical work hasbeen done that may have disturbed the valvelash adjustment, set valves "cold" at 0.018 inch(0.45 mm) clearance so engine can be run andallowed to warm to normal operating4-125
