UNIT MAINTENANCE OF THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST SYSTEMS ANDBREATHER TUBE4-50GENERAL.a.The intake system consists of a dry type air cleaner assembly with a replaceable filter element which removesdust and dirt from the engine combustion air. The air cleaner assemblv is equipped with a condition transduc-b.c.er. The air cleaner condition transducer measures the vacuum Created by the filter element, but it transmitsan electrical impulse which illuminates the AIR CLEANER CONDITION indicator lamp on the engine controlpanel when the filter element becomes unserviceable.The exhaust system Provides a means of expelling exhaust fumes from the engine and muffles much of thenoise generated by engine operation.The breather tube provides an escape route for gases which accumulate in the crankcase during engine opera-tion. The gases pass through the breather, located in the engine valve cover, and are expelled into the air cleaner housing through the breather tube.4-51 AIR CLEANER ASSEMBLY.a.Removal.(1)(2)(3)(4)Disconnect electrical leads from air cleaner condition transducer.Disconnect start aid tube assembly and remove spray nozzle (paragraph 4-34).Disconnect breather tube assembly (paragraph 4-54).Remove nuts (1, Figure 4-32), lockwashers (2) and screws (3) to remove retainer (4) and filter4-74element (5).Remove screws (6) and Iockwashers (7) to remove housing (8) and gasket (9).Remove condition transducer (10).(5)(6)b. Cleaning and Inspection.(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)c.Installation.(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)Clean filter element as directed in paragraph 4-52.Clean all other parts with a dean, lint free cloth moistened with an approved solvent.Inspect air cleaner housing for dents, cracks, corrosion and other damage.Inspect air cleaner condition transducer for cracked casing, corrosion, evidence of shorting and otherdamage.Check all threaded parts for stripped or otherwise damaged threads.Replace any parts damaged beyond simple repair.Install air cleaner condition transducer (10, Figure 4-32).Install gasket (9), housing (8), lockwashers (7), and screws (6).Install filter element (5), retainer (4), screws (3), lockwashers (2), and nuts (1).Connect breather tube assembly, (paragraph 4-54).Install spray nozzle and connect start aid tube assembly (paragraph 4-34).Connect electrical leads to air cleaner condition transducer.
