TM 5-6115-593-12TO 35C2-3-463-1Section XXVI. MAINTENANCE OF ENGINE ASSEMBLY4-66.GENERAL. The engine provides mechanicalpower to drive generator. The diesel engine is a 12-cylinder, V-type, turbocharged, aftercooled type, rated at750 hp at 1800 rpm. The engine air intake systemconsists of a precleaner with a replaceable filter. Theengine is equipped with monitoring and control devices, lube oil cooler, and an independent governing system.See figure 4-40.4-67.WATER PUMP BELT. (See figure 4-41)NOTEAll generator sets with engine serialnumbers 10605201 and higher are equippedwith a new style water pump. Setsequipped with the new pump require nobelt adjustments. The following procedureapplies to serial number 10605201.a.Adjustment. (1) Remove screws andlockwashers on front adjusting sheave.(2)Turn engine over manually to rollbelts outward on pulley as pulleysheaves are turned in to obtaindesired belt tension. The engine canbe turned manually as follows:(a) Remove cotter pin from manualengine crank bolt.(b)Push bolt toward generator toengage gear.(c)Use a wrench to turn bolt.(3)Turn front and rear adjusting sheaveswhile securing hub in stationaryposition to obtain desired belt tension.(4)Lock front and rear adjusting sheavesin position with lockwashers andscrews.(5)Check belt tension by applyingpressure of the index finger at thecenter of the longest span of the belt.Deflection should be approximately 1inch (25 mm).b.Replacement. (See figure 4-41. )(1)To replace water pump belts, removethe screws and lockwashers whichsecure the adjusting sheaves to thefixed sheave.(2)Loosen the adjusting sheaves andremove belts.NOTEAlways replace belts in complete sets toprevent early failure and provide efficientoperation. Belt riding depth should notvary over 1/16 inch (1.59 mm) on new beltsets.(3)Belts should not bottom on pulleygrooves and should not protrude over3/32 inch (2. 4 mm) above top ofedge of groove.(4)Install new water pump belts topulleys and secure in position with theadjusting sheaves, lockwashers, andscrews.(5)Adjust the water pump belt tension asdescribed in paragraph a, above.4-68.SERVICING DCA WATER FILTERS. (Seefigure 4-40. )NOTENew engines are shipped with a DCA pre-charge element. At first oil change (seeLubrication Order) replace pre-chargeelement with normal DCA Service Element.Replace filter element at each oil change. Ifcoolant is drained and the coolant isreplaced, install a DCA pre-charge elementand repeat cycle. To test coolant corrosioninhibitor use Fleetguard DCA, Part Number3300846-S, or Cummins Coolant, PartNumber 3375 208, Test Kit. 4-99
